About the BaselConnect Education web site:
The website presents the new school system, currently being introduced from the primary level up, in Basel-Stadt. With the harmonisation of school systems across Switzerland, the Basel-Stadt and Basel-land systems will be very similar (number of years in each school, subjects taught, etc.)
The information provided here is based on documents published by the Education Department of Basel-Stadt. We have tried to make the content easy to understand for people new to the Swiss and Basel school system, highlighting aspects that may be different from your home country and issues that are particularly important to families from abroad.
Each section was read by someone from the Basel-Stadt education system for accuracy both in the details, but also in terms of the spirit of the Basel school system. We are very grateful to all the people who took time to read the document carefully, give us constructive feedback and then checking again the final document. We hope that we are as a result able to offer a true picture of what the local school system has to offer. (Obviously, all errors remain ours.)
I would, in particular, like to thank the following people for their time and support, without which we could not have put this document together:
Jürg Bauer, Rector of Kirschgarten Gymnasium
Christian Griss, responsible for the primary and secondary schools (Volksschulen, Leiter Dienste/ stv. Leitung Volksschulen)
Claudia Henrich Manetsch, responsible for the organisation of the compulsory school system (Volksschulen: Schullaufbahn-Verordnung)
Benedikt Jungo, President of the Handelsschule Board (Vositzender der Schulleitung, Handelsschule KV Basel)
Roland Widmer, Rector of the Fachmaturitätsschule
I would also like to thank members of the Education Group in Basel connect who helped with this project: Sarah Taylor for starting Basel Connect education group; Jeanne Darling for help with the Kindergarten section; Karen Dyson for documents on the Gymnasium. And a Big Thank You to Anthony who made it possible for you to access all this information on the website he made for us.
The BaselConnect Education site is the first resource to provide information in English about the new system for schools in Basel.
